Fundamentals of Process Safety Management

Duration: 3 days

Format: Instructor-led course with interactive discussions, case studies, and workshops

HAZOP OU

Overview

This intensive three-day course provides a comprehensive foundation in Process Safety Management (PSM) — extending well beyond compliance with regulatory frameworks such as SEVESO, ATEX, and PED. It incorporates principles from CCPS Risk-Based Process Safety (RBPS) and other international best practices to deliver a holistic understanding of how to design, implement, and sustain effective PSM systems.

Through real-world examples, practical exercises, and interactive group sessions, participants gain both theoretical knowledge and practical insight into managing process safety across the full lifecycle of operations.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for both technical professionals and management personnel responsible for process safety performance and decision-making.

Technical specialists:

  • Process engineers and technologists (design, HAZOP)
  • Automation and instrumentation engineers (SIS, SIL)
  • Process safety and HSE specialists
  • Maintenance and reliability engineers (critical protection layers)
  • Management and decision-makers:
  • Facility and plant managers
  • Engineering and production managers
  • HSE managers and risk owners

Target Industries

The course applies to a wide range of high-hazard industries, including:

  • Chemical and petrochemical: process design, distillation, storage, and hazardous material handling
  • Pharmaceutical: solvent use, reactor operation, and cleanroom safety
  • Power generation: boiler, turbine, and fuel system risk control
  • Food and beverage: ammonia refrigeration and pressurized systems
  • Mining and metals: leaching, tailings, and pressure operations
  • Semiconductor and electronics: gas and solvent delivery systems
  • Hydrogen and battery technologies: explosion and thermal runaway prevention
  • Aerospace and defence: fuel systems, testing, and munitions safety

Learning Outcomes

Participants will gain the knowledge and tools to:

  • Understand how process safety evolved and why major incidents occur
  • Apply risk management and ALARP principles in daily operations
  • Integrate inherent safety into both new projects and existing plants
  • Develop and maintain effective PSM systems and competency programs
  • Manage compliance and performance through KPIs and audits
  • Address human and organizational factors affecting safety
  • Improve alarm management, operating discipline, and safe work practices
  • Apply risk analysis methods such as QRA and LOPA
  • Strengthen asset integrity, MOC, and operational readiness
  • Enhance contractor safety, emergency response, and continuous improvement

Expected Improvements and Benefits

After completing this training, participants will be equipped to make more informed, risk-based decisions and to identify weaknesses in existing process safety systems before they lead to incidents.
They will develop a deeper understanding of how human, technical, and organizational factors interact, improving their ability to anticipate and prevent failures rather than react to them.

Participants will return to their workplaces with practical tools to:

  • Strengthen safety culture and operational discipline within their teams
  • Improve the integration of process safety into design, operation, and maintenance
  • Lead or contribute more effectively to HAZOPs, LOPAs, and MOC processes
  • Communicate safety priorities confidently to technical and management audiences
  • Support continuous improvement and alignment with global best practices

The overall result is a measurable improvement in risk awareness, process reliability, and organizational safety performance.
